Guiding you to live a greater life with God, yourself and your most valued relationships through life-shaping fly fishing retreats and outdoor adventures.

“Our soul is like a stream of water, which gives strength, direction, and harmony to every other area of our life. When that stream is as it should be, we are constantly refreshed and exuberant in all we do, because our soul itself is then profusely rooted in the vastness of God and his kingdom, including nature; and all else within us is enlivened and directed by that stream.”

– DALLAS WILLARD

What We Do...

Altar’s mission is to guide people to live a greater life with God, themselves and their most valued-relationships through life-shaping fly fishing retreats and outdoor adventures. Altar retreats weave the art of fly fishing with intentional life and leadership coaching, create time for personal reflection, rest and renewal, and help chart a course of next steps for greater soul health, resiliency and impact. Add great food, lodging, fellowship and conversations, and this robust experience will leave a lasting mark on your life. Our primary focus is on three types of leaders: pastors and those in vocational ministry, high-capacity organizational leaders, and elite military personnel.

Why Fly Fishing?

Fly Fishing offers a great platform and metaphor that compliments our times of learning and reflection by providing adventure, teaching, serenity, and yes…humility.

Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
As we say, trout live in beautiful places and creation has the power to unwind the soul, breathing new life within us. Even brain science is reporting the goodness of devoting time away in nature yielding heightened awareness, elimination of distractions, and increased focus.

When you stand in the coolness of a mountain stream or feel the power of a rapid from a drift boat, when you feel the unforced rhythms of grace in a fly rod when it shoots line forward, when you feel the tug on the end of your line, when you pause, look, listen and observe lifting your eyes up, something happens that words often struggle to articulate. It is poetry, beauty, adventure, and joy that anyone can learn to do–and Altar loves introducing people to and deepening these kinds of experiences in the lives of others.

Why We Do It...

Leaders influence others.
Have you considered the power of your leadership and the ripples of impact you have in the lives of others? Are people better for being connected to your life and leadership?

One of the greatest needs, battles and opportunities before us is the building of healthy souls who influence homes, churches and workplaces. Why? Because we live and lead from the overflow of life. Today, people and leaders statistically are more stressed, anxious, depressed, unhappy, angry, restless, and fragmented like never before. But this story can change–from the inside out. Leaders can learn to thrive, not just survive.

Nothing Short of Awesome!

"This retreat was nothing short of awesome for me. Connecting with other leaders that face the same challenges as I do was very valuable. We learned from each other. We opened up to each other. We learned to focus on developing one’s soul. And the coaching we received was tremendously valuable. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to hit the reset button and improve their relationship with God, while becoming a better leader."

The Great Outdoors

"Altar helped me get away to the beauty of the outdoors so I could get out of my hectic rhythms and hear from God. The retreat was not only fun, but created space for authentic conversations that allowed for transformation and gave us tools for how to assess the state of our souls so we can sustain healthy soul care beyond the retreat."
